lucy jumped today! after months of trying, she actually got both feet off the ground at the same time. just a small thing, in the grand scheme of things, but i just wanted to write it down...

[mood |worriedworried]

after a trip to the park today, lulu was tired and cranky and not feeling well, it seemed. she wanted only to sit on my lap and nurse, actually dozing off for a bit. but when she was awake, she was alternately somewhat lethargic and then she'd cry like she was in pain, but only for a second. mor mor came over and held her for a long time. i checked her body, looking for bug bites or injury, but i couldn't find anything. and she wouldn't tell us if something hurt. finally, i was reading her a book and mormor noticed that she was favoring her left arm. so i checked her out, no swelling, no dislocation or anything. she said that her elbow hurt. and sure enough, she was fine unless i tried to straighten out or bend her arm. because it feels fine and isn't bruised or swollen, we haven't done anything special, although we got some children's tylenol in case she is in more pain during the night. i think that she just twisted it somehow- she was doing her famous passive resistance thing as we left the park and got in the car, so she may have banged it or something, too. we'll see. poor baby. i think that the lethargy was just 'cause something hurt and she didn't know how to deal with that! i just night weaned her, too, so no comfort nursing during the night...unless mama makes an exception. i don't know...

lucy, arms up above her head: "reaching."
mama: "what are you reaching for?"
lucy: "tye." (the sky)
lucy, continuing to reach as hard as she can: "almost."

couple of loveable lulu things [Sep. 20th, 2004|02:25 pm]
anything goes
lulu has favorite books now. she refers to them in the most loveable ways. for example, "hush little baby", a sweet update of the familiar song, is called "banjo" because the mama plays a banjo on one page. she won't go to sleep without it. likewise, 'ferdinand', about a peace loving bull, is called "bumblebee" because of a bee featured on one page.
when she gets really excited about something, she makes a sound: "oh!" that is more just air escaping, really fast. as in "oh! daddy!" when she hears him coming up the stairs. or "oh! mowing!" when she hears a mower outside. it is a lovely sound.

after a lovely morning with jaaladay and family, lulu was obviously overdue for a nap. she had a medium sized fit in the stroller, leaving the park, then started a full on tornado of a fit when i was getting her into the car seat. i had suggested that we go home and nurse on the couch and she really grabbed on to that idea, shouting "couch!  couch!" while crying and screaming and wiggling. she was actually foaming at the mouth. i'd never seen her that bad!!  so i started the car and started to drive, thinking that that would calm her down, but about 4 blocks down the road, there was no change. so i stopped the car and turned around. "are you ok, lulu? are you in pain?"  she just kept screaming. so i said "do you want to go nurse on the couch?" "yes." "well then we have to drive there. we have to drive home because that is where the couch is."

not another sound from the back seat. within a block or two she was asleep.

who knew that speaking calmly and rationally could actually work?

ten best things about madison so far. [Aug. 22nd, 2004|08:45 am]
anything goes
  1. the house. i'm liking it. it is suburban, no doubt about that, but there is alot of room and it is looking like home...
  2. the yard. so great to be able to go outside and blow bubbles or whatever and still be in my pajamas and no shoes and all. it hasn't been very hot, though, so lulu hasn't gotten to use her little pool very much. we need to get a sandbox.
  3. my mom. we've seen a lot of her, which is great. she is going to watch lucy today while ej and i go to a movie. this will be a first!  i am very excited. it will be fine, 'cause lucy loves her- calls her 'mo mo' and talks about her all the time.
  4. lucy knows her great grandfather by name. calls him 'mozo'. and we can just meet him for dinner on a whim. how great is that?
  5. there are cows just a few blocks away. lucy doesn't appreciate that yet, but i think that it is pretty cool.
  6. big mike's subs. ej is addicted. this keeps him happy, which is a good thing.
  7. getting to know new (and old) friends. especially when they have kids that are lucy's age. she is loving playing with new kids!  and she is learning alot.
  8. ok. so it isn't ten. eight isn't bad. it's only been three weeks!

lulu's favorite things [Aug. 22nd, 2004|08:38 am]
anything goes
i can't decide if my daughter is brilliant or a bit of a freak. her favorite things right now:

washing her hands (she climbs up on her stool and says "hand! hand!" then she wants to dry them. she does this many many times a day.)

eating ice. ("ice! ice!")

getting her diapers put on her babies. (then she takes them off again. it is endless.)

drinking from a cup. (she sits in her little chair and drinks very carefully from a cup. a real cup, no sippys here. then she carefully puts it back down. then she wipes her face and the table and anywhere else that she spilled. then she starts over again.)

so there is definately some obsessive compulsive behavior going on. but she is 17 months old. i think that i'll just embrace this behavior as adorable and brilliant. which she is.

[mood |melancholymelancholy]

so lulu and i are having a hard time settling in here. the house is getting better, feeling more like a home, but i still feel like we're on vacation. tomorrow marks 3 weeks here and i think that both of us are sort of ready to go home now! she's been having a rough week- getting upset alot easier than normal about things like diapers and such. and i think that she misses her cousin alot. she talks about her all the time...
so i had a bit of a break down today...my dh took over like a champ and let me take a big nap and then go to a movie, which was nice. i guess that i just feel the need to get out more and get to know this town again. i lived here when i was a teenager, but it is a different place now! or i'm a different person. or both.
it'll get better.
